James Philip Hewlett II (1810-1878)
James Philip Hewlett II stands at the centre of this branch of the Hewlett family, his life linking the legacy of earlier generations with those who would follow. Though less prominently recorded than some of his forebears, he emerges through scattered references as a figure shaped by family, faith, and circumstance. His story is best understood not in isolation, but through the lives of those around him, his wife, his children and the wider network of kin to which he belonged.
He married Elizabeth Shackelford (1815-1906) on May 3, 1836, in Cheltenham. She is buried in the Wheatley churchyard, and is acknowledged on the tombstone of her husband, who is buried with his daughter, Sarah Secunda, in the Purton churchyard.
Together, they formed a household whose influence extended beyond its immediate circle. The lives of their children, and the paths they took, whether remaining close to home or journeying as far as the Antipodes, reflect both continuity and change within the family narrative.
